Thanks to the data opening project, Bor has become the first city in Serbia to receive precisely edited digital data of safe paths and routes for students, in order to increase their traffic safety, as well as to enable better and more transparent provision of public services to citizens. Namely, within the Open Data Challenge for Civil Society Organizations, the Media and National Higher Education Institutions, organized by the Office for Information Technologies and eGovernment in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), 5 projects have been approved for funding under three thematic areas.
The City of Bor gets Safe Routes for Students thanks to the Open Data Project

One of the selected projects, the activities of which are being carried out in Bor, is the project of a civil society organization – Serbian GIS (Geographic Information System) Association: “Safe paths and routes for elementary and high school students in Bor”.
The overall objective of the project is to increase the capacity of the city of Bor for the improvement of traffic safety, by enhancing the local self-government system for spatial and urban planning and municipal management. The activities and expected results will be implemented over a period of 6 months, within which the causes of accidents will be examined, graphic and web maps i.e. digital models of safe paths and routes for students created and critical locations determined. In this way, the safety of students as the most vulnerable road users will be improved and increased, precisely because most educational institutions are located close to busy roads.
Also, the data on the safety of children in traffic will be publicly available to citizens of Bor in the form of new open datasets of public and other facilities, traffic and communal infrastructure on the website of the City of Bor and the Open Data Portal (data.gov.rs), as well as tailored trainings for school children for the participation in traffic by modifying planning documentation, as well as the schools’ Student Safety Regulations.
Let it be reminded that the Challenge, conducted under the “Open Data - Open Opportunities” Project, supported by the World Bank, the United Kingdom’s Good Governance Fund (GGF) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), had a clear objective of contributing to building an ecosystem of open data in Serbia, by encouraging the use of open data by public institutions, promoting the various applications and uses of open data, as well as building the capacity of various target groups to process and creatively use open data.
